One of the terms most commonly thrown around in the entertainment industry today is high definition, although many people use the term without really knowing its actually meaning. High definition televisions are rapidly becoming one of the most popular consumer electronics products sold around the world, but do people really know what they're buying? Let's take a look at the basic definition for the word, as well as some of its advantages HD TVs have over standard formats.

High definition refers to a video format that is a higher resolution than standard definition, or SD video. It usually has a display resolution of either 1280 x 720, known as 720p, or 1920 x 1080, known as either 1080i or 1080p. High definition is set apart from standard definition by three major areas – the number of lines in the vertical display resolution, the scanning system, and the number of frames per second.

The number of lines in the vertical display resolution for high definition video is either 720 or 1080, as opposed to standard video's 480 or 576. High definition video is also broadcast digitally, as opposed to analog televisions which pick up broadcasts through antennas or cable. The scanning system for high definition is called progressive scan (the p in 1080p) or interlaced scanning (the i in 1080i). Progressive scanning redraws the frame of an image when it is refreshed, whereas interlaced scanning draws the image every other line. Interlaced scanning has a better image resolution for images that are not moving, but loses much of its resolution and can suffer a "combing" effect when the image moves. The number of frames per second for high definition video is sixty for progressive scan and fifty for interlaced scan, which is significantly higher than standard video.

Many new forms of content made for televisions are broadcast in high definition, which allows HDTVs to take advantage of their format in order to create a clearer picture. Even if the content is not broadcast in high definition, however, the picture will still have a higher resolution, better frame rate, and a better scanning system than a standard video television. HDTVs are rapidly becoming one of the most popular products in the consumer electronics field, and are found in many homes across the world. If you are interested in a new television, there are lots of LCD and plasma displays that offer high definition, and have had their prices reduced due to new technology.
